Abstract
The uses of transgenic mice carrying the Cre recombinase gene driven by the adenovirus EIIa promoter are described. Since the EIIa promoter is active in oocytes prior to fertilization, matings between EIIaCre mice and mice carrying locus of crossover (lox) sites should result in the production of embryos in which the DNA sequences flanked by the lox sites are deleted in all cells. The results of a survey of 10 laboratories that use EIIaCre mice are discussed. It is concluded that matings between EIIaCre mice and mice carrying lox-flanked target genes reliably yield progeny in which the target DNA sequence is deleted.
