To the Editor: Several publications have reported APOL1 variants (G1 and G2) to be
associated with kidney diseases, including focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, HIV-
associated nephropathy, and nondiabetic end-stage renal disease, 1 as well as kidney
allograft survival. 2 The G1 and G2 risk alleles in APOL1 are prevalent in African populations
