BRAIN INJURY The brain consists of relatively incompressible tissue (Walsh 1996)
enclosed in the rigid boundaries of the cranium (Brunner and Suddarth 1992). Primary brain
injury is commonly the result of head trauma (Tortora and Grabowski 2000), the severities of
which are linked to the mechanism of injury (American College of Surgeons Committee on
Trauma 1997).
