Chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudoobstruction is a heterogeneous syndrome. The
symptoms are extremely variable, the pathophysiology is probably diverse and generally
obscure, and the treatment is correspondingly empirical. Any advance in our understanding
of this syndrome will require careful and extensive study of such cases and a considerable
advance in our understanding of the physiology of gastrointestinal motility.
