In 2003, there were an estimated 35,000 new cases and 12,480 deaths in the United States
attributed to tumors of the kidney and ureter [1]; of these, approximately 75% are renal cell
carcinoma (RCC)[2]. The bulk of the literature in RCC reflects clear cell RCC because it
accounts for approximately 70% of all adult epithelial kidney tumors in surgically resected
