Microenvironmental conditions in infected, inflamed or damaged tissues are characterized
by low levels of oxygen (hypoxia) and nutrients. Myeloid cells (mostly macrophages and
neutrophils) account for 95% of the cells newly recruited into inflammatory sites, and exert
