BACKGROUND/AIMS: Studies in animal models and humans suggest a link between
endotoxemia and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Since Kupffer cells are responsible for
clearing endotoxin and are activated via endotoxin interaction with Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-
