Despite mounting evidence that attests to the ubiquity of Cryptococcus neoformans,
cryptococcosis develops in only a few of the many persons who must be exposed to this

The reasons for this disparity are not understood, but there has been speculation that these patients with clinical illness represent only a small part of a much larger population that has been infected with C. neoformans. Hopefully, immunologic methods will be valuable in clarifying the epidemiology of cryptococcosis, and the present report describes a continuation of previous efforts in this laboratory to develop a skin test antigen that would be suitable for this purpose (2).
