The weight of interscapular brown fat in the rat and its rate of respiration increased in
response to a single meal. These data suggest that brown adipose tissue plays a role in the
thermic effect of meals and that diet-induced thermogenesis may reflect the summation of
the thermic effects of single meals during prolonged overeating.
