The functional role of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) in the developing brain has yet to be
elucidated. We show that mice lacking HDAC3 in neurons and glia of the central nervous
system, Nes-Cre/HDAC3 conditional KO mice, show major abnormalities in the
cytoarchitecture of the neocortex and cerebellum and die within 24 h of birth. Later-born
neurons do not localize properly in the cortex. A similar mislocalization is observed with
