Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a key regulator of adaptive thermogenesis and
energy expenditure. Mice lacking UCP1 are cold sensitive, but surprisingly not obese at
room temperature. In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Feldmann et al.(2009) unmask an
obesogenic phenotype by simply maintaining these mice at thermoneutrality.
