ABSTRACT A panel of influenza A viruses expressing chimeric hemagglutinins (cHA) with
intragroup or intergroup head/stalk combinations was generated. Viruses were
characterized for growth kinetics and preservation of stalk epitopes. With a few notable
exceptions, cHA viruses behaved similarly to wild-type viruses and maintained stalk
epitopes, which indicated their potential as vaccine candidates to induce stalk-specific
antibodies.
