A technique was developed for the detection by immunofluorescence of antigen on the
membrane or surface of cells infected with varicella-zoster virus. The detection of antibody to
this membrane antigen has been used successfully to confirm the clinical diagnosis of
varicella-zoster infection. Its particular advantage over existing methods, however, is its
usefulness in determination of susceptibility to. varicella. The method described is rapid,
sensitive, specific, and easy to perform.
