Procedure. Human blood can be obtained fresh or out-dated through a blood bank; heparin,
EDTA, or citrate may be used for anticoagulation. All procedures are performed at 0-4. Red
blood cells are washed three times by sedimenting in a swinging-bucket rotor (2300 gmax
for 10 minutes) and resuspending the pellet in five volumes of PBS. The buffy coat is
carefully aspirated each time from the surface of the pellet. Hemolysis is initiated by rapidly
