Sir: Allergic reactions to latex have been reported ha an increasing number of patients within the last few years. Four risk groups have so far been identified: patients with spina bifida, severe urogenital malformations, atopic diseases and individuals with occupational exposure to latex [1]. Since allergic reactions may include intraoperative anaphylaxis, pre-operative screening for latex sensitisation is recommended for patients belonging to the above risk groups. In a review of 18 children undergoing intestinal surgery in their 1st years of life we found 3 with symptomatic latex allergy.
The first patient with Fanconi anaemia, anal atresia and rectro-urethral fistula was operated on four times in the first 7 months of life. After 4 years the patient had a severe anaphylactic reaction when a Hickman Broviak catheter was implanted. Latex-specific IgE was extremely elevated (CAP-RAST class 6), specific IgE against other inhalant and nutritional allergens was only marginally positive and not associated with clinical symptoms. Skin tests were not performed.
