The microvessel wall is composed of two principal cell types: endothelial cells, which form
the inner lining of the vascular tube, and pericytes, which form its outer sheath. During the
process of angiogenesis, extensive cross-talk occurs between these two cell populations
(Risau, 1997; Folkman and D'Amore, 1996; Beck and D'Amore, 1997; Blau and Banfi, 2001).
Accordingly, cell surface and extracellular matrix components that mediate or modulate
