Urea and the renal concentrating operation in man

The handling of urea in the renal concentrating operation is compared with that of a
nonpermeant solute (mannitol) over a physiologic range of solute excretion. Comparisons
are made in the hydropenic state during vasopressin administration in twelve subjects on an
80 gm. protein ward diet and in three subjects whose protein intake is varied. The rate of
solute-free water reabsorption (T c H 2 O) was approximately the same for any given osmotic
