Proteolytic enzymes have been implicated in the pathogenesis of emphysema. Enzymes
previously used to induce emphysema in animals share the property of actively degrading
elastin, but also have other proteolytic activities. To investigate the capacity of elastase to
produce emphysema, Syrian hamsters were injected intratracheally with 25 units of porcine
pancreatic elastase and animals killed at intervals of up to 2 months. Elastase activity
