Two key regulatory enzymes in the bile acid biosynthesis pathway are cholesterol 7α-
hydroxylase/CYP7A1 (7α-hydroxylase) and sterol 12α-hydroxylase/CYP8B1 (12α-
hydroxylase). It has been shown previously that hepatocyte nuclear factor-4α (HNF-4) and
the α 1-fetoprotein transcription factor (FTF) are activators of 7α-and 12α-hydroxylase
