The unfolded protein response (UPR) is an ensemble of signal transduction pathways that
respond to perturbations in the oxidative, pro-folding environment of the endoplasmic
reticulum. During the past decade, ongoing research implicated these pathways in
maintaining homeostasis of cells and organisms exposed to various stresses. Herein, we
highlight recent findings regarding the functional role of the UPR in both normal and
pathophysiologic processes.
