The pyruvate dehydrogenase complex catalyzes the irreversible oxidative decarboxylation
of pyruvate to form acetyl-CoA. This reaction links glycolysis and the citric acid cycle in every
cell containing mitochondria. The activated twocarbon acetyl unit can also be used for fatty
acid and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and fatty acid synthesis in adipose tissue. Meals
rich in carbohydrate and low in fat provoke maximum flux through the complex in most
