The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) incorporates several host-derived
proteins during the budding process. Here, Michel Tremblay and colleagues review recent
studies that indicate that virion-bound host molecules are still functional and are affecting the
biological properties of HIV-1. Therefore, these nonviral components should be considered
as factors putatively affecting the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection.
