Recent breakthroughs in cancer metabolism include the identification of an alternative
glycolytic pathway in proliferative cells and an essential role for the serine synthesis
pathway in breast cancer. With a data-driven approach, as opposed to the conventional
hypothesis-driven approach, in this issue, on page 1040, Jain et al. determined that rapidly
proliferating cancer cells require large amounts of the nonessential amino acid glycine,
which has clear and direct implications for cancer therapy.
