Although initially well known to specialists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,
later in the twentieth century intrinsic dangers associated with epilepsy were denied.
Gradually, however, acceptance replaced denial, and the subject has been ''topical''for some
years. Yet, despite significant strides, there has been little translational research and virtually
no advance in prevention. Instead, an almost fatalistic attitude has been adopted in some
