Even though acute nephropathy is a consistent feature of hemolytic-uremic syndrome, the
availability of dialysis has practically eliminated acute renal failure as a cause of death in
this syndrome. Extrarenal involvement is now the major determinant of death at an early
stage and is a major contributor to chronic morbidity. Twenty years ago Gianantonio et al. 1
from Buenos Aires reported extrarenal microthrombi in 20 of 26 cases after autopsy; in 13 of
