The Na-Ca exchanger plays a major role in Ca2+ efflux and therefore in the control and
regulation of intracellular calcium in the cardiac muscle cell, or cardiocyte. We recently
observed that hemodynamic load induces a rapid 2-4-fold increase in Na-Ca exchanger
message levels. This finding is very remarkable and suggests that the expression of the
exchanger, which is so critical to calcium homeostasis in the heart, is acutely sensitive to
changes in cardiac load.
