With the assumption that the amount of motivated behavior is a function of the amount of
activity in certain excitatory centers of the hypothalamus, a physiological theory of motivated
behavior is presented along with supporting evidence from a variety of different motivating
situations. The problem of learned motives is also considered. A section on theoretical
