Active NF-κB renders malignant hepatocytes refractory to the growth inhibitory and pro-
apoptotic properties of transforming growth factorβ1 (TGF-β1). NF-κB counteracts TGF-β1-
induced apoptosis through up-regulation of downstream target genes, such as XIAP and Bcl-
X L, which in turn inhibit the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. In addition, induction of NF-κB by
