It is known that, among human patients with sepsis, acute renal failure (ARF) dramatically
increases mortality rates to 50 to 80%. However, the pathogenesis of septic ARF is not fully
understood. An increase in endotoxin-induced mortality rates for leptin-deficient ob/ob mice
was recently demonstrated. In comparison with ob/ob mice, db/db mice, which are deficient
in the long isoforms of leptin receptors (Ob/Rb), demonstrate lower mortality rates after
