The dissection of genetic resistance to murine cytomegalovirus infection in inbred laboratory
mouse strains led to the identification of a natural killer cell activation receptor that
recognizes a virus-encoded protein. Herein, we summarize the genetic approach and
findings that have provided novel insights into innate immune control of virus infections.
