THE clearance of colloidal particles in animals has been studied in several experiments1–
16. The use of bacteriophage in such studies offers a sensitive tool to augment materials
such as dyes, radioactive colloids and enzymes for analysing mechanisms of handling
foreign particulate material. Furthermore, such use of bacterial viruses may enhance the
general understanding of virus–host interactions.
