The retina is an integral part of the central nervous system (CNS), communicating directly
with the brain via ganglion cell axons passing through the optic nerve, and is composed of
six neural cell types: photoreceptor, horizontal, bipolar, amacrine, interplexiform and
ganglion cells organized into eight layers. This review addresses photoreceptor cells only.
