Limitations on studying many human diseases and genetic defects are caused by a lack of
suitable animal models containing the specified genes and corresponding disease-
associated mutations. This problem has been overcome, in part, by the development of
transgenic technology, which makes it possible to remove genes or insert foreign, defective,
or mutated copies of genes into mice, to create an animal model of disease that can be
analyzed in the laboratory.
