Activator protein-1 (AP-1) was first identified as a transcriptional factor that binds to an
essential cis-ele-ment of the human metallothionein lla (hMTIla) promoter [1]. AP-1 is
required for optimal basal activity of the hMTlla promoter in vivo [2-4] and in vitro [1].
