DEFINITION OF A MYOFIBROBLAST The simplest definition of myofibroblasts is that they
are smooth muscle-like fibroblasts. Some investigators define them as activated smooth
muscle cells (8, 9); others call them lipocytes because of their propensity to store retinoids
(Vitamin A)(10). They are also known as stellate cells due to a shape change when they are
transiently differentiated.
