Abstract
During an outbreak of dengue-like fever in South India in August-December 1964, 272 isolations of a virus tentatively identified as chikungunya virus were made from material from human cases in Vellore, Madras and Pondicherry and 111 from Aedes aegypti (L.)[cf RAE B 54 187, etc.] collected in these places and at Ranipet, about 18 miles from Vellore. No isolations were made from Culex pipiens fatigans [Culex quinquefasciatus] Wied.(C. fatigans) or from mosquitos of the complex of C. vishnui Theo. One strain of dengue type 1 and three strains of dengue type 2 were isolated from human material.
