During the past several years, the critical role of costimulatory molecules in regulating T cell
responses has been demonstrated. Costimulatory molecule CD28 enhances whereas CTLA-
4 downmodulates T cell responses. An understanding of the integration of the signals
mediated by costimulatory molecules and the T cell receptor at the cellular and molecular
levels is just beginning to be achieved.
