Nucleotide signaling is currently an area of intense investigation. Extracellular adenosine
triphosphate (ATP) liberated during hypoxia or inflammation can either signal directly to
purinergic receptors or, after phosphohydrolytic metabolism, can activate surface adenosine
receptors. Given the association of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) with adenine
