IN spite of an extensive literature1, 2 little is known about the way in which insects defend
themselves against bacteria. Antibodies have not been found in animals more primitive than
certain species of fish3, 4 and organ transplantation is possible in larvae of several species
of Lepidoptera5 unopposed by defensive systems such as found in vertebrates.
