Volume 117 Clinical and laboratory observations 5 93 Number 4 consequently we
administered the polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine to our patient 2. Because of the known
increased risk for overwhelming pneumococcal sepsis in asplenic patients, we recommend
that all'patients with the APEC syndrome (autoimmune polyglandular failure) be periodically
studied for evidence of hyposplenism in addition to other known autoimmune disorders, so
that appropriate prophylactic therapies can be instituted at the first sign of hyposplenism.
