The origin of definitive hematopoiesis poses a fundamental biological question. In this issue
of Developmental Cell, two groups have independently found a novel hematopoietic stem
cell (HSC) niche in the extraembryonic placenta, in addition to previously identified
alternative locations of hematopoiesis at different developmental stages.
