Chronic diarrheal illnesses, especially ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, have been
associated with an increase in renal stone formation. Several groups have reviewed their
patients with inflammatory bowel disease, over periods ranging from 6 to 20 years, and
found stones occurring in 3.2% to 8.6% of their patients [1–3]. This is perhaps twice as high
as the rate of stones in normal subjects of the same age and sex. The rate of stone formation
