Abstract Steroidal Δ 4-3, 6-diketones undergo two diagnostically significant fission reactions
after electron impact. The first is due to scission of the 9–10 and 6–7 bonds with and without
hydrogen transfer to yield peaks at m/e 137 and 136, which correspond to ring A and carbon
atom 6. The other involves cleavage of the 9–10 and 7–8 linkages with rearrangement of
one hydrogen atom and charge retention with rings C and D. Consideration of the mass
spectral fragmentation can thus yield valuable information on the substitution pattern of Δ 4 …
