Conclusions Apoptosis is an important mechanism of lymphocyte and gastrointestinal
epithelial cell death in sepsis. Although abundant in vitro studies indicate that endothelial
cell apoptosis can occur in response to certain pathogenic organisms (eg, Rickettsia
