Prostanoids, which consist of the prostaglandins (PGs) and the thromboxanes (TXs), are
produced by a variety of cells in response to both physiological and pathological stimuli, and
are released outside of the cells immediately after synthesis. Because their biological half-
lives are short, they act in the vicinity of their production site to maintain local homeostasis.
