The physical perfection of the vertebrate eye has perplexed e~ olutionary biologists ever
since Darwin's days. The central position in the eye is taken by the transparent lens, which
focuses the incoming light onto the retina. At the molecular level we are beginning to
understand which genes and proteins were used to create the lens as a novel organ in
evolution.
