IgA is the most abundant immunoglobulin produced in mammals; most is secreted as a
dimer across mucous membranes. This review discusses the different mechanisms of
induction of IgA, and its role in protecting mucosal surfaces against pathogenic and non-
pathogenic microorganisms.
