In vivo evidence strongly implicates the central gray in expression of the physical symptoms
of opiate withdrawal. Preprothyrotropin-releasing hormone (ppTRH) mRNA is highly
expressed in the central gray. Furthermore, systemic administration of thyrotropin-releasing
