Experiments were conducted to determine whether photoreceptor outer segement
components contain precursors for lipofuscin fluorophores that accumulate in the retinal
pigment epithelium (RPE) during senescence. Intravitreal injection of the lysosomal
protease inhibitor leupeptin caused a rapid accumulation of inclusions with lipofuscin-like
