The proposed classification was aimed at distinguishing subgroups according to the degree of disease activity to provide prognostic information and criteria for the use of immunosuppressive therapy. In the initial classification, distinction was made between a milder category of disease, termed chronic persistent hepatitis, and variants with more severe disease activity, termed chronic aggressive hepatitis.
